UNDERSTANDING BLOOD CHOLESTEROL TESTING
The first step in evaluating your risk of heart disease due to high cholesterol is to measure your Total Cholesterol (TC). A TC test measures the total amount of HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol) in the blood. The recommended level for total cholesterol is less than 200 mg/dL, and the recommended level for LDL cholesterol is below 100 mg/dL. A high HDL level of 60mg/dL or more is beneficial and may add protection against heart disease.

A TC/HDL ratio is a good way to look at heart disease risk. This ratio compares the amount of good HDL to your total cholesterol level. A ratio of 4.5 or less is desirable. The main goal of treatments such as diet, exercise and medicines is to lower the amount of LDL cholesterol, which will improve the TC/HDL ratio. This can decrease your risk for heart problems and heart attack.

It is also important to measure glucose to determine if you might have diabetes. More than half of the people in the United States who have diabetes do not know that they have it. People who have high blood glucose (blood sugar) levels have a greater risk of developing heart disease than people with blood sugar levels in the normal range.

HEMOGLOBIN A1C TEST
Using the DCA 2000+, our pharmacists and diabetes educators can help you determine how well you are currently managing your diabetes. The DCA 2000+ performs a hemoglobin A1c test. This test measures the average of your blood sugar levels over a 2 to 3 month period. Your hemoglobin A1c is a measure of how much sugar is stuck to your hemoglobin. This test tells you and your health care providers what your average blood sugar level has been for the past 2 to 3 months. If you have lots of sugar in your blood and your average blood sugar has been high for the past few months, then your hemoglobin A1c will be high. The hemoglobin A1c test allows you to see how good your control has really been. Kunkel Pharmacy is an approved provider.

A hemoglobin A1c higher than 8% is a warning sign that your diabetes is out of control. This high test value signals a need to change your diabetes care plan. Making changes to bring down your hemoglobin A1c can lower your risk of major health problems, including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye disease, nerve damage, amputations and circulation problems.

The American Diabetes Association recommends that everyone with diabetes should have a hemoglobin A1c test done every 6 months or more often if using insulin. This test is an excellent tool to help you with managing your diabetes. Remember - the power to manage your diabetes is in your hands. Schedule an appointment today. Call 513.231.1943, extension 110 to schedule an appointment for your hemoglobin A1c test and information on taking control of your diabetes.
