WHAT IS AN OSTOMY?
An ostomy is a general term for an operation in which an artificial opening is created for the elimination of bodily wastes.

Ostomies are performed due to disease, congenital anomalies including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or injury.

A surgical opening called a stoma is made in the abdominal wall and the end portion of the colon or small intestine is brought outside to the skin surface.
